3 Truths About Business That I Learned From…My Garden?

Hi there!

A few weeks ago, I stepped out of my comfort zone and made this video to capture the beginnings of my vegetable garden. It’s only my second year of trying my hand at gardening and, since things went so well last year, I wanted make sure I captured all the wonderful growth on camera this year.

But things aren’t going as expected 😣.

Honestly, in the weeks since that video, my veggies haven’t been doing much at all. The growth is super slow, the plants aren’t very bushy, and I’m not seeing too many flowers (the precursor to the fruits). And I’m pretty sure by this time last year, I had already harvested and enjoyed a full salad, complements of my Year 1 garden. So I’m feeling kinda ugh about where things are right now.

As I tend to do when I’m not happy with outcomes, I assess why things turned out the way they did and what I can do differently next time. In the case of my slow-growing garden, I now realize that:

  • I got started a month later this year than last
  • I overwatered my tomatoes at one point (it was sooo hot, and I overcompensated 😫)
  • There were circumstances beyond my control (late-spring cold weather, periods of heavy rain, and whatever effects the Canada wildfires may be having on production)

Despite the above realities, I’m still a little disappointed with the state and outlook of my garden.

But this isn’t a garden blog, so let me make this relevant.

We work hard to build our business and our brand. We invest in the tools and resources we need to be successful. We sow seeds of our time, faith, effort, and care for our clients. And sometimes, after all that, we still don’t see the results that we think we should. Business isn’t booming. People aren’t purchasing. Followers aren’t following. And if we’re honest, things can be a little disappointing.

In those times, it’s helpful to remember three truths:

  1. It’s God who gives the increase (1. Cor. 3:6-8). There will always be things out of your control. Focus on what you can control. Do what you can do, and trust God to take care of the rest.
  2. All hard work leads to profit (Prov. 14:23). That “profit” does not always come packaged how we expect it to. Your gain could be clarity, peace of mind, a new connection, a different perspective, or affirmation. Revenues are great, but profitability and abundance in business and life go way beyond money.
  3. You will reap if you don’t give up (Gal. 6:9). Keep planting, nurturing, and putting in the work. No matter what it looks like right now, your business will grow as long as you keep going.

Wishing you a fruitful summer,
