Last week, you started thinking about and writing notes about what you want in your business mission statement. Some questions you asked were: what you do, who you serve, and what value you bring.

This week, we’re going to take those notes and put together an actionable, inspiring business mission statement that will help you articulate your business’s goals and values. It will answer the question, why do I do what I do?

Your business vision statement lights the path created by your business mission statement.

Ready to get to writing? Excellent!

Real World Examples

But first, let’s look at some mission statements from other companies.

  • Shea Radiance: to influence the way women care for themselves and others.
  • Mielle: to serve Black women with a high-performance product and natural ingredients.
  • Ivy Park: to help women look and feel at the top of their game.

A mission statement should not be vague and sentimental with no substance. It should be actionable! Some elements it should contain are:

  1. Who you are
  2. What you do
  3. For whom
  4. How
  5. and Why

Read over your notes. What stands out? What doesn’t? What makes you feel good? What feels meh? What is true for your business right now? Which are future goals? Do you want those future goals in your mission statement now? Are you working on achieving them now?

Use action words, vivid adjectives, and colorful language to get to the heart of your business.

Your Final Product?

Your business mission statement doesn’t have to follow a specific formula, but a good one could be:

Who (your business name) does/do What (verb + product or service) for Whom (your client or customer) by How (verb) so that Why (the reason you do it).

Your business mission statement will become a part of your business decision-making process and your daily operations. So if your mission statement is not inspiring you to take action, get back to work on it!

As your business changes, as you change, your mission will change. Regularly, maybe once a year or so, take a step back and look at your business mission statement, and make sure it’s still accurate for you and your business. If not, if your business has pivoted to a new direction, change your mission statement! YOU are in control. YOU forge your path. YOU lead the way.
