In the quest for greater productivity, we often focus on things like optimizing our schedules, sharpening our time management skills, and trying new productivity hacks. And in our efforts to do more with less, it can be easy to overlook the one thing that makes a big impact on our ability to work efficiently: our physical environment. From the layout of our workspace to the ambient sounds and even the temperature, every aspect of our surroundings plays a role in shaping our mood, mindset, and ultimately, our productivity.
Have you ever noticed how your productivity fluctuates depending on where you’re working? For me, I find it easy to focus and get things done at Starbucks. Ok, maybe it’s the coffee and banana nut loaf, but I digress. Perhaps you feel more focused and energized in a bright, well-lit room with minimal distractions, while a cluttered, noisy environment leaves you feeling scattered and unfocused. This isn’t a just coincidence; it shows that our surroundings affect how our brain functions and, as a result, how we work.
Let’s take a look at four factors of our physical environment that can influence our productivity:
- Space: How organized and clutter-free is your workspace? A tidy desk and a well-organized environment can help clear your mind and minimize distractions, making it easier to focus on your tasks.
- Sounds: Some people work better with background noise, while others prefer peace and quiet. Experiment with different types of ambient noise, like music or white noise, to see what helps you concentrate best.
- Smells: Believe it or not, scents can also affect your productivity! A pleasant aroma, like citrus or lavender, can boost your mood and cognitive function, while unpleasant smells can be distracting. Consider adding a scented candle or essential oil diffuser to your workspace.
- Temperature: Are you too hot or too cold? Extreme temperatures can make it hard to concentrate, so try to keep your workspace at a comfortable level. Adjust the thermostat or use fans and heaters (safely!) as needed to create the perfect working environment.
The bottom line? Your physical environment plays a huge role in your productivity. If you find yourself in a rut, consider making small adjustments to your environment to see if it makes a difference. Try changing your routine and working in a space that stimulates your creativity and fosters focus.
